Cyprus cyber crime boss: Parentss protect your kids

5th March 2009

As cyber crime has been increasing in the past few years, the competent office of Cyprus police has stressed the need for parents to take the necessary measures to protect their children from potential dangers on cyberspace.

According to the Head of the Cyber Crime Office Markos Nikolettis, Cyprus has been receiving lots of information from services and non governmental organisations from abroad regarding cases of child pornography and it contributes to their detection.

In an interview with CNA, Nikolettis noted the increase in the number of illegal interferences and interventions in the personal data of internet users, mainly of youngsters, aiming at their vilification. The Cyprus Cyber Crime Office was established in September 2007 and according to Nikolettis the number of complaints it has been receiving has been increasing. In 2008 the Office investigated 121 cases. Eighty-one of them were cases regarding child pornography and 19 concerned illegal cyber hacking: interventions, interferences and forgeries.

On the 81 cases of child pornography, Nikolettis said that 25 of them concerned foreign countries and relevant information was communicated to them. In 36 cases allegations were not established. Four persons have been prosecuted and these cases are still pending before the courts, while 13 other cases are still being investigated.
